The Brooke is led by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall, wife of Prince Charles, Prince of Wales. An avid and accomplished horsewoman, she is serving her second term as president of the Brooke’s board of trustees, which oversee our international programs.
The Brooke’s vision is of a world in which working horses, donkeys and mules are free from suffering
and better able to support the families whose lives are inextricably tied to theirs.
To that end we have established Brooke USA, a 501(c)(3) charity to seek partners in the U.S. who have the heart and the means to join us.
Our trustees, patrons and ambassadors include notable figures in the equestrian world such as Her Royal Highness Princess Alia of Jordan, sister of HRH King Abdullah II and HRH Princess Haya; Major Richard Waygood, Chef d’Equipe of the British Olympic Team; Jane Holderness-Roddam, the first British woman to win an Olympic gold medal in eventing, and many others.
Brooke staff and staff employed by Brooke-funded affiliates and partners provide free veterinary and animal health services in order to relieve the suffering of working horses, donkeys and mules in Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Jordan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal, Guatemala and Nicaragua.
Thousands of training sessions take place every year in these countries so that community animal health workers can treat working horses, donkeys and mules locally, thereby expanding our efforts to reach more animals.
We also undertake valuable, practical research to support our evidence-based approach and help communities to better help their own horses, donkeys and mules, by building the skills of local farriers, harness and saddle makers, feed suppliers, and other service providers.
On a global scale, we also seek to influence governments and other institutions to raise the profile of working equine animals on their policy and development agendas.
In addition we lead from the front in the field of animal welfare, ensuring our rigorous standards and guidelines are applied in all the areas where we work.
The Brooke USA is a 501(c)(3) charity that exists solely to support the overseas work of the Brooke through our North American headquarters at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.
